Yes, but that's not the point.
The MP3 format is less efficient than some of the newer compressors.. but the fact is, the vast majority of compressed music is in MP3 format (think of all those Kazaa downloaders..)

Sure, the Atrac format gives better sound quality, if ripped directly from a CD. But to convert an MP3 to Atrac gives degrades the quality even further than the CD-MP3 conversion.

So, you're either forced to rip all of your songs AGAIN, or suffer inferior sound quality.. all because Sony doesn't support MP3 natively.

A music player that doesn't support the most popular format is not going to do well.. mark my word on it.
