Sony's sub-par standards
Do the research eh? All my research into electronics has led me to avoid Sony products for 2 main reasons:
1: They insist on using proprietary formats. Frankly, I don't like getting locked in to one type of thing...and, in most cases, their formats offer no significant advantages over the standards

2: Sony's customer service is absolutely horrid! Ever had a Sony product go bad on you? I have. They will try their hardest to avoid fulfilling their warranty; in my case, they refused to because they claimed the damage was done by the user (based on the fact that the housing for the product was scratched in an area nowhere near the faulty part). I cannot and will not trust and invest in a company that will not stand by its products.

Oh yes, I tried that Minidisc player too...I got it for christmas 2 years ago. I returned it the next day when I found out that it DIDN'T play MP3s as it described on the package (listing itself as an MP3 player) and that, not only did songs take up MORE space than their MP3/OGG counterparts, they also sounded crappier, due to the less-than-impressive ATRAC format.
