Trouble on horizon for 'white box' PC makers

Desktops have always offered the best combination of performance, features and cost. That is not likely to change in the near future. For many users who want both the functionallity of a desktop and the freedom of a portable, the evolving smartphone will be attractive. Phones such as the iPhone and the soon to be Google phone, along with a wave of others from the various cell phone companies, will allow the user to have greater mobility than a traditional notebook computer would ever offer. Some predictions indicate that this trend will seriously cut into the notebook market.

That said, I used to sell white box machines, and like the article said, it became difficult to compete with the likes of Dell and still make a reasonable profit. I eventually changed my business to helping my clients buy name brand computers and set them up, billing for time, and made more money than I would have selling them a PC. This also eliminated any warranty worries, and I got paid to do warranty service on their systems. Overall, a much better business for both me and the client.
