desktop replacement laptops?
There are recent rumblings about customizable and upgradeable laptops such as the ASUS C90-C91 line, a desktop replacement laptop cheaply using mostly desktop parts, and graphics card manufacturers are starting to build to a form factor as long as you stick with that manufacturer's card and keep within heat and power limits (nVidia uses MXM and ATI uses AXIOM form factors). You generally have the sticking point of motherboard and CPU, but many newer laptops that I've seen (which I admit, is now a grand total of 4) are shipping with socket CPUs rather than soldered CPUs, which should allow for a CPU upgrade (again, as long as power and socket form factors are met).

I hope this trend continues and we start seeing a parts market for laptops. While I don't necessarily see a whitebook laptop market emerging, at least in the near future, I still can build PCs for my family and friends with off-the-shelf parts cheaper than Dell can since I can undercut them on support and labor costs (it's my hobby, not my day job, and I watch the parts market fairly closely on sites such as Pricewatch).
