Should have standardized on Alpha
Alpha sales may have been disappointing, but it's still a very good chip, a known quantity, and owned by HP, instead of Intel. IA64 has been hyped for years, but it's still not widely available and may, in fact, end up being eclipsed by AMD's Opteron architecture.

And if HP wants increased interoperability with other vendors, they can still license Alpha to competing hardware vendors, or even spin off the Alpha business into a separate company, if vendor politics get too weird.

HP is trying to put a good face on a series of bad decisions; good luck, but I think they would be better off changing course.
