There's a lot of regular Joes with options
It's funny, the second someone mentions "stock options", people immediately think of CEO's and other officers that get large stock grants that after years of stock growth yield millions. Well, there's a lot of regular guys out there whose lives are better off because some options they were granted years ago have paid off.

I work for a tech company that has fared fairly well over the last 14 years. Our stock has appreciated, we've had our high-flying days, and we've also had our down periods. There are tons of regular people here that have made a few extra bucks because the company was generous enough to issue stock options and share the wealth. People were able to improve their homes, maybe put an addition on their house, put their kids in college, take care of family members, etc. Yes, their are some people that have made out extremely well, also, but it's the regular Joe's, the middle-America people where you see the biggest effect.

Remember, stock options aren't worth anything when they're first granted. The strike price is set at whatever the market price is - hence, no value. And, they only end up having some value if the stock goes up. Remember, stock prices don't always go up.

Stock options are a great incentive to people to give a little extra to get the new release of the product out, to put in a few extra hours to meet a deadline. Incentives are what keep people motivated and driven. Take away incentives, and you end up with a bunch of government workers. Gee, that's swell.
