64bits for the masses is useless
Intel "copied" the AMD instructions in order to not bifurcate the X86 market. I would give the loads of credit for protecting that franchise that has served everyone well. Instead, you stoop to the national enquirer explanation. Oh well.

I can see why you think 64b for the desktop is such a great thing. After all, 64 is a bigger number than 32. The fact is, 64b precision computing is useless. In fact the vast majority of 64 bit machines leave the top 32 bits as zero. The only clear benefit is addressing and that is not a big deal. As for intel 'catching up', yeah OK, whatever you say. I would propose Intel wanted to push Itanium arch into the mainstream - which is a far better arch. So let's celebrate ! We have the old clunky X86 arch for the next 100 years, yippee.
