The Sempron is aimed at low cost machines. As you say, Celerons perform quite badly at anything that requires genuine grunt, but people buy them anyway to save a few dollars. Performance is not king for most users, features are.

So if AMD can enter the low-end without hurting their Athlon market, why not? Keeps the pressure on Intel and doesn't allow them any soft markets.
