RE: VMware: Not just hypervisor revenue
Virtualisation is fantastic. You just can't buy desktop systems with small cheap cpus anymore, so why jnot make that 2GHz 1GB ram machine run multiple services. Brilliant!
At home I use VMWare server, and run an ifolder server, a joomla webserver and a general imap/samba/dhcp/dns server all on one old desktop pc (CPU is only 1.2GHZ, but I stoked it up with 2GB RAM and works fine for my 2-4 family members) When I upgrade, all I have to do is copy my vm guests to the new box (or just remount the harddrive with the guest files on) and I get more CPU and memory with no reinstallation. Yay!!!
I've done that twice now as I have upgraded my main deskop, the old desktop becomes the server, and the old server becomes the kids workstation 8)
At work we have jsut started using VMWare ESX over the last year, and now run over 30 guests in 7 ESX hosts, over two data centers. The only new servers not being virtualised have either specific hardware to be installed or are not inside our corporate lan. we are now working our way through older servers whose hardware is coming out of warrantee and virtualising them as part of their patching and update cycle.
If an app does crash or a windows service pack needs to install, server reboots not only take a minute to complete but can be doen remotely.
I Love virtualisation. I have my weekends and nighttimes back 8)
