- cost isn't really the point.
-
/I see you point but the componets of the X-box are off the shelf componets that you can buy at any hardware retailer. Doing the lawnmower to go-cart can be done already and is done by every PC owner out there./
OS software is just another component of the machine, no more or less relevant than the engine in the lawnmower. Once a product is bought fairly the consumers interest is that compatible components should be removable, exchangeable or even repurposed. That's not really our point here though.
Neither is the cost. A consumer looks at an X-box and sees a game console. A hobbyist looks at it and sees a collection of repurposeable parts. In the 70s the go-cart hobbyist saw the same in his lawnmower.
The difference is: once the lawnmower is sold, the owner is free to do as they like with the device - even to make it into a go-cart. The lawnmower manufacturer doesn't really care, because they've already sold you a lawnmower. If you want to use the components for other than the intended purpose; they've still made the sale.
We all know this isn't the model of Microsoft vis-a-vis the X-Box. The profit is in the games not the console, so they stand to lose money if the device is repurposed, but that doesn't mean the device can't or shouldn't be repurposed. Like the lawnmower manufacturer, and Sony for that matter, Microsoft should simply jump on the realization that since it will happen; they should make money from it.
That was my point. Yours is also well taken, once re-explained. - Posted by: John Le'Brecage Posted on: 11/10/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
