You sure it was me? Do keep in mind that I talk to LOTS of people.

Either way,

1. I don't think it's impossible to license the reference platform to other licensees. I just don't see much market scope to do that...yet. Once XBox is more established, maybe, but certainly not now.

2. Microsoft IS drifting to the Apple model (or the Sony Playstation model), but they are doing the same thing in cell phones, and other markets where entrenched players are less inclined to consider using a Microsoft OS or software product, out of fear that they will get commoditized.

3. you - Specifically that the Xbox hardware, which ran essentially the same hardware as an OEM PC would decimate the PC gaming market and that less PCs would be sold for gaming. The introduction of the Xbox essentially put Microsoft in competition with their OS customers and competing with one's own customers is not a good idea.

me - I don't really see that at all (but if we had this conversation before, I probably said the same thing then). People don't see game consoles as PCs, and the only ones who see it that way are the ones trying to get XBox run Linux. I really don't see why a Dell would have anything to fear from an XBox.
