I see you point but

The componets of the X-box are off the shelf componets that you can buy at any hardware retailer.

Doing the lawnmower to go-cart can be done already and is done by every PC owner out there.

Also fashionable case are available to buy, they cost a little more though. I can buy a mini white box case for $13 (no powersupply) or I can spend $80 for slick looking custom case (no powersupply). If I'm really ambitious I could create my own case from scratch.

Also note that a lawnmower manufacture doesn't have to make it easy for you to take the engine out and use it for something else. But doubt they'd care anyways.

Personally if the X-box costed $700 buy but the games where sold for $20 a pop, I think they'd probably kill sony.
