RE: Microsoft aims at VMware's virtualization lead
Microsoft had to purchase Connectix' Virtual PC to get a decent virtualization product, as apparently they were unable to code one themselves...

Sadly, the outcome of the Connectix purchase was that Virtual PC 5.1 for OS/2 was dropped (yes, it was possible to run Win2K virtualized inside IBM's 32-bit OS/2).

But perhaps that was their goal right along.

The good news is that the makers of the Connectix Virtual PC for OS/2 port, the German company Innotek Gmbh have now released their own virtual machine product, dubbed "VIRTUAL BOX" and released it under a dual commercial AND Open Source license ! (under the GPL!).

Also, let's not forget that there's also the open source KVM
