- What about SPEED?????
-
We're reaching the point where hard drives are actually big enough (at least for current uses!) and small enough (the 1.8" 60G in a pocket size drive for streaming is a neat idea), but they're not getting any faster! Other than WD's Raptor series, there aren't any mainstream drives that provide better speed for a premium price.
Wouldn't it make sense for somebody to put 2 or even 4 heads in a 10K RPM drive (and maybe even get creative, and house it in a 5.25" box so we can get the really high linear speed on the outside tracks, and have room for multiple ARMS)?
I'd be willing to pay several hundred dollars for a reasonable size (200G or even less) drive that does 2ms seek times and really manages 150MB/s or better read and write times.
It HAS TO be possible-
Four heads on the same arm could give us the equivalent performance of a four drive stripe set.
Using more heads but a narrower swath of track area would cut seek time to a fraction.
Two pairs of arms would cut the latency in half.
Come on, drive people! Do this! - Posted by: Steve Summers Posted on: 09/06/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
