what "gear" is needed?
What is this "gear"?

I live in Europe and if you are so inclined a satellite receiver, a computer and a serial cable to the smart-card slot are the only pieces of equipment necessary... plus of course the software that emulates the smart-card.

With the exception of the cable (which has some legitimate uses for programming some satellite receiver's firmware) many thousands of people own the "gear".

I also own a smart card programmer, some plug-in modules and smart-cards - but I have a legitimate use for them and although they can be programmed to watch TV (I know cos I tried it out) making posession of such equipment illegal wouldn't stop those using the PC method (which requires much less capital outlay if you already have a PC).

I won't even mention the Linux based Digital TV (Sat/Cable/OTA) PVR set-top box that is fully programmable which is on sale at many satellite dealers across Europe. It, of course, can emulate both the encryption module and the smart-card happy
