I thought that Intel had long been attempting the migration to 64b. I seem to remember a chip called, wait a minute... Oh yeah!!! Itanium.

Although there is no need for 64b on the desktop, that doesn't mean people aren't buying 64b processors. Intel noticed that, and decided to copy AMD's 64-bit extensions to the x86 instructions in order to have a chip that can compete.

As for your contention that Intel will 'develop the slow migration to 64bits': The migration is already underway. Intel is trying to get on board.
