Until they deliver we won't know what this means, if anything.
Unfortunately, Intel has a history of announcing
the release of a chip for a specific date when in
reality the supply is so low that anybody who
doesn't have a relative on the Intel board of
directors won't have a chance to buy one until 6
months later.

And until we find out how both price and
performance compare to Opteron we won't know what
this means. If the price is twice that of Opteron
and the performance is no better, then this
release means nothing to the consumer. Likewise
if the price is similar but performance pales in
comparison, this won't mean anything. This is the
first time where Intel is NOT the first out of
the gate with a new processor type (in this case
I'm talking about a 32/64 bit hybrid), so that
advantage is gone, and they will be immediately
compared to Opteron. And it's also worth
mentioning that AMD has a desktop 32/64 bit
hybrid and Intel does not, so smaller departments
who don't want or need to pay the premium for a
Nokona or Opteron could get away with using a
cheaper Athlon64.
