simple math
Blu-ray will require a much more expensive retooling of equipment for the movie manufacturers to support it which of course means more cost passed down to us. Any time a company can think of even the most lame excuse to justify increases prices...they will. Look at our oil for example. All you have to do is sneeze in the Middle-East and the prices shoot up + $10 - $15 in an instant. I personally don't care which manufacturer produces what but I am not in any hurry to embrace a technology that forces me to either ditch everything I've invested in our attempt to maintain equipment for 2 different formats. With that being the case, I have to lean towards HD-DVD if for no other reason than to protect my current investment and my pockets in the future.
