If either one of these OSes are freezing and/or crashing regularly, you're doing something terribly wrong. Both are extremely stable OSes when used and maintained properly.

Why? Are you downloading programs from Kazaa, visiting pr0n sites, opening random email attachments?

If the answer is yes to any of these, then you should update and patch regularly. If not then you don't have much to worry about. Plus, it's not like updating AV is a big pain. It's actually quite easy. No real reason to complain there.

What does that have to do with your machine?

BTW, I have 2 friends with Macs that I have to help out fairly regularly (i.e. about twice a month)... not really that big of a pain.
