also ... performance is more about design than implementation
case in point.

build a multi-threaded GUI and it feels faster when run on a multi-processor box because it is faster. Threads are running on more than one CPU at a time.

design the same GUI as a single threaded app and run it on a multi-cpu box and its wasted. People throw 4-way boxes at problems thinking they are getting more bang and they would be better with a faster cpu. Likewise, for most things, multi-threaded SW running on multiple processor boxes at a slower rate is going to simply run faster.

And now we get to see a slew of multi-core chiips coming out ...

... SW design is the limiting factor today, then system design (busses and peripherals etc.), then established standards to allow SW to be moved to silicon and att he end of the chain is CPU speed. Its really just a measure of the production process rather than relevent for 95% of the problems out there!

That's why clusters of low cost boxes are replacing super computers for high end stuff ... its really about throughput and SW design and not CPU speed ... unless you want to go 150MPH in a 60MPH zone!
