CPU speeds

I think that some people are finding out that CPU speed isn't something to give up an arm and a leg for.
I've heard a number of people say that they got a brand new PC that is only a 2-2.5GHz machine. NOT the fastest out there.
I asked a co-worker (DBA guy) if he remembers when CPU speeds hit 500MHz. And if he remembered it hitting 1GHz. These speeds were hit with great fanfare. Then I asked if he knew what the fastest Hz was out right now. "I don't know, over 3 gig right?".
{Does anyone know exactly off-hand? Most don't care to follow it anymore.}
I remember buying a PC and trying to find a 166MHz instead of settling for a 150. It was 10% faster, and a little more expensive. Today's 3400MHz Prescott is only 6% faster than yesterday's 3200MHz, but it's about $200 more. And as noted: WHAT does the AVERAGE user do with it? {Note I said "average".}
