The article indicates the UK judicial system agreed and even awarded costs in Sony's favor.

I suspect Sony settled because they'd already spent millions on lawyers been found in favor and not recovered the money they'd spent.

Settling with this guy was probably a decision that drew a line under the matter for a known fixed amount; something that years in other courts around the world wouldn't afford them.

Given that they have a judgement in their favor and this is an out of court settlement Sony too can be considered to have "won".
