Linux does the same thing
You can run entire Linux distributions completely from CD . . .

And the medium from which it boots doesn't change the number of BIOS calls, AFAIK . . .

Most of the limitations are actually limitations of the filesystem, not the BIOS. AFAIK, Windows never actually *bypasses* the BIOS to access the harddrive, although it might fool it into being able to access more space.

. . . but after some research, I've found that most of the limitations are related to the filesystem, *not* the BIOS.
