Never had a proprietary format problem.
I know I am right about that problem. He didn't mention my scenerio though. He was mentioning about media rotting from old age. I was talking about equipment that plays that media no longer available as the biggest threat, because the player is built with a short life span. Then they quit making it orphaning data. Media must be transferred to the newest media right away that is evolving into the new standard while the technologies overlap in time. 100 year old formats will never exist because the problem I just mentioned will come first, forcing the transfer.

It is a choice but it is hypothetical. It will also never happen except with really, really lazy archivists. And since he is always talking open at all cost, it is a bit obsessive.
