The Issue Is Documented Open Standards
Whether it be 100 or 500 years from now, computers and other information storage devices will be radically different from today's. Heck, today's languages may not even exist; understanding modern English may be a field of classical literature akin to reading ancient Greek or Latin.

But if we leave behind detailed instructions on how to read these then-ancient files, they'll know what they're trying to extract and how to get to it. I seriously doubt that Microsoft and other proprietary software companies are carefully documenting their formats for the future (witness Microsoft's present difficulty in documenting their network protocols and APIs for the EU). Just thinking of that reminds me of the UserFriendly comic of the other day where Miranda and Sid are discussing a piece of ccode that Miranda had written. Sid's comment was that you couldn't tell what was regex expressions and what might be line noise.

Only documented, open standards will preserve this information for future generations.
