Bringing out 64-bit capabilities does NOT require 4GB of memory
"Bringing out the 64-bit capabilities requires 4GB or more of memory" - that is not true. You can use 64bit capabilities even with less physical memory, but you can have 2^64 bytes of virtual memory. If you have 10 GB database, you can map it into virtual memory on 64bit processor (so you can read from it just like if it were in memory (of course only portions of it can be at once in physical memory if your memory is less than size of file, but your O.S. can handle that))
Mapping such large file into memory is not possible in 32bit architecture. And 10GB database (or 10gb file generally) is not so uncommon these days, since we have 250 GB+ harddrives.
