MS has had plenty of time.
AMD announced as far back as 1999 or earlier about the Hammer processor, which was suppose to be a 64 bit x86 processor.

I thought this to be an impressive feat way back then. If I happened to be a multibillion dollar corporation, I would have probably began back then and forked the OS into an IA64 and a 64bit x86 version of the OS. Ofcourse, it wasn't until 99 that the trademarked "Athlon Processor" that AMD really became a name in the computing world. Before, they were pretty much known as generic Intel chips.

Now things are different, AMD has something that Intel doesn't, a processor that runs 32 bit applications and 64 bit applications. Something that is quickly coveted by gamers and server room junkies alike.

Tis a big change in pace for the processor world and Intel is going to be knocked down a couple pegs before they can regain their grip on the market. Yet I still wish to call Microsoft out for dragging their feet when they could be creating competition in the marketplace. Only a monopoly would help out another monopoly.

Don't fret though, another monopoly is out to really create turmoil for Microsoft and Intel.
Who would be big enough to do such a thing. Why IBM ofcourse. How you ask. Simple, they are opening up the PowerPC archetecture to vendors. Imagine true 64bit processors running Linux for the price of a PC. Could it happen? Who really knows. But if it does, the PC world is going to be turned upside down, and some major corporations are going to be screaming rape.
