Interesting Speculation, but...
"...it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see IBM toss their hat back in the "PC" ring in the very near future. Don't forget, IBM probably knows more about hardware platforms than anyone else and they are primarily a hardware company."

As a former employee of the IBM PC Company, I can tell you:

* They have the processor technology
* They have the semiconductor technology

However, with respect to PC platforms, excepting some people in e-Server development (who are too valuable to reassign), there is virtually nobody left who has the knowledge to successfully develop a PC platform.

They aren't a very good partner, either, as the O/S-2 debacle proved, and are out-marketed by the likes of Microsoft.

The biggest impediment, however, is management. They simply don't have the cajones to hang with Intel and AMD when the inevitable price war breaks out. Both Intel and AMD NEED their PC processor business to survive. IBM doesn't, and so they won't be willing to sustain short-term losses in order to dominate in the long term.

Interesting, still!
