Feature Creep
Just going from game developement stand point here. If you write looking to the future you can sink yourself with feature creep. That is when you keep adding feature and never release the product forming a case of vapour ware and you run into the problem of losing the fun or the game in favour increased features.

Now I don't think this is as much of problem of something like an OS as the lifespan of OS is in years where as a game's life span is days or weeks. Basically once you've beat the game so many times you generally stop playing it. So I guess Microsoft can get away with it fine.
