The real story
Microsoft released a 64bit OS for Itanium shortly after Windows XP. It was Windows XP Pro for the I64. They have since released versions for servers with Windows Server 2003. AMD64 was not supported because it launched after XP and too far into the development cycle for Windows 2003. Microsoft added support for the AMD64 to their roadmap for the Windows Server 2003 Sp1 timeframe. It was to be available for XP and 2003. In the meantime Intel announced a x86 64bit extended xeon processor. There will be full support for both amd64 and x86 64bit in Windows Server 2003 SP1. An XP version will also be available at that time. Longhorn will support whatever processors are available at the time it launches. The only work Microsoft is doing with IBM for their processors is for the Xbox.

It was Intels decision early on to go with I64 verses x86 64bit extended that caused the delays. Microsoft went with them on which 64bit architecture to support. In the end they are supporting both.
