Not Necessarily...
I live in Spartanburg, SC -- not necessarily a "major technology hub," with a city population just under 40,000 and about 225,000 in the county -- yet our daily paper had a front-page story on the iPhone debut Saturday, as well, with a picture from inside one of the local AT&T stores showing a line outside from just before 6 p.m. Saturday, and telling how the guy in front had been waiting since midnight the previous night for his (he was quoted in the story that his first competitor for the line showed up about 5 a.m.).

It's possible -- JUST POSSIBLE -- that Apple actually DID want to make sure that just this ONE TIME a major rollout by a big company with big hype included adequate product for every customer who wanted one, NOT the kind of supply fiasco Sony debuted the PS3 with last Christmas.

While I'm NOT a big fan of a lot of the aspects of big corporate America, I DO believe that some companies -- Apple being one in particular -- actually DO want to make their customers happy (once they decide to pay their prices and put up with their DRM scenario, that is), and having adequate supply of a new product is definitely one way to ensure that.
