The second you don't have support it breaks and leave you up the creek with out a paddle. Been there many times.
It's not just Sun or Red Hat charging you this it's everyone. You buy from Dell you pay for support. You can do it your self for less but it's a pain in the rear hunting a replacement for a bad MOBO but when you have a service contract with Dell or Sun they have supplies to replace parts. That to me is why you pay.
Also Microsoft charges you you first born child for support at $400 per hour.
