Instability and insecurity aren't the only support factors. Arguably the #1 issue in system administration is backup management. Not against system failure but against user errors.

Other critical support requirements are load/capacity balancing, user account administration, enhancement/update sheduling, and platform cycle management. How much of this you do in-house and how much you farm out is a management decision.
