Ease of use...
Linux/Unix are very stable and secure. The advantage of Linux/Unix is that you don't have to worry about security and stability issues to the same degree as other operating systems.

The downside to Linux/Unix is that they are not yet as easy to use as other platforms -- not everything can be accomplished with point-and-click.

Contrast this with Windows, where most administrative tasks are done via a simplified GUI. This makes things easier for the novice administrator/user.

In a server environment you WANT the low-level control, secuirty, and stability of UNIX. In a desktop environment, ease of use is more important than 99.999% uptime. It's no wonder that Linux/Unix dominate the server market and Windows/Mac dominate the desktop market.

MS will make a better server. Linux/OSS will make a better desktop. In the end though (say 20 - 50 years from now), we will see Linux (or some free UNIX) as the dominate platform in both markets.
