Defective DVDs?
That's the way they are supposed to be. If you don't like wide screen buy the formated for television DVDs. Personally I don't care for how they chop up a movie to format it to television.

Also if you don't like the Black space on the top or bottom of the TV you can if you TV supports it stretch the show to fit or you can buy a Wide Screen TV or HDTV.
