It is a matter of perspective
I don't want a mobile phone because I don't want people bothering me while I am out. I have only needed a mobile phone twice, both due to car trouble. However, I was able to find a phone nearby.

My neighbor has HDTV, and it is nice. We watched the super bowl on it. But it is not worth the extra expense to me. I only watch a couple of TV shows, so no big loss.

On the other hand, I wanted a digital camera from the get go. Same with a PC. Walkmans too.

The thing is, people are going to base their opinions on what they think they need in life. I don't want a "connected" house because I don't see a need for it. The suggestions you made are nice, but don't really make life better for me. I like taking my daughter to the grocery store - they have a fake chicken that lays eggs and she goes crazy over it. So I would still have to come home to get her. The UPS man has never had to leave a package at the neighbors, they just leave them at the door. I had given thought to the web cameras to check up on my children. But then I thought, hopefully I raise them right and can trust them. That may change, but it is not new technology by any means.

The technology I can't wait for - cars that never need fuel, or drive without user intervention, or can hover. Or maybe a holodeck happy Until then, most technology is just gadgetry to me. I want a simple life. Reading a good book by the fire while my daughter - soon to be daughters - play on the floor.
