Rule of useful innovation
Somebody has commented that useful innovations are those you didn't know you needed, then find you can't do without.

Aside from gadgeteers, people try what they can afford that sounds plausible. Some things don't pass the plausibility test.
For example, you wrote:
Why would anyone want an expensive HDTV, regular TV is good enough and all the shows are horrible anyhow?

I don't have cable because I don't have to pay not to watch television. Now I can add that I don't need to pay HDTV prices to leave the set off.
So that fails the plausibility test for me.

However, when movies are substantially better on HDTV, that's different.
Particularly when they stop manufacturing those defective DVDs that show only one third of the screen, leaving the top and bottom black.

That's one thing I hope gets automated soon: quality control.
