Devil's advocate..
..Monitoring and controling the HVAC in the average home would result in a 5% to 10% savings in energy and associated costs....

OK, this is one that might work except that most people who can afford this networked house are not concerned with, nor have the time for 5-10% savings.

..A simple flow indicator could shut down the water system should a pipe ever burst. (Big help for those in the north that deal with frozen pipes every winter.)...

This is good except you don't need no Internet for an electronic valve.
Now if it could download an OSS (free as in free) plumber....

..tell UPS to take the package to your next door neighbor...

Ya mean this networked house didn't know it was coming?
Hope the neighbor doesn't do likewise, who knows where the package would end up.

..The house web cams lets you check up on the kids as they get home from school as you drive home from work....

You're watching videos while driving?
Hope the life insurance covers the kids education.

..Oh my, the boss just invited himself to supper, what's in the fridge? (Have the fridge do an RFID scan and report back.)...

Now, if the roast can hop over to the oven, the spuds peel themseves, we're in business.

They started talking about this sort of thing back in the bubble daze.
It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now.

Whatever the merits of automation and technology to help us with our chores cooking the boss an impressive dinner only starts with seeing what's in the fridge.
The rest is up to you. A real life person.

That's my $.02

Joe
