If speaking solely in terms of market share, that is true. If you and I are the only two competitors in the market, any market share gains I make come at your expense and vice versa. But that's only part of the story.

If the market grows by 10% and you capture 75% of that growth, and I capture only 25% of the growth, who has lost anything? Your shipments are up, and so are mine. Yours are up more than mine though, and you now have a larger market share than I do.

However, Sun and HP have a lost in both ways of looking at the issue. The market grew, while their market shares and revenue declined.
