- Power issue.

Every cell phone I've used continues to run off of it's battery even when plugged directly into an AC outlet. Now, I freely admit I know nothing about designing electrical systems, but would adding the ability to run straight off of a normal AC outlet really add that much in cost or size/weight to a mobile device? Sure, it would be a little nicer if the projection feature wouldn't need you to do that, but I'd think in most cases where that feature would be really likely[1] to be used, this wouldn't be a major issue.
[1] I'm thinking:
1) You're on a trip to and at a hotel.
Even the cheapest hotels have AC outlets, where on the other hand only the most expensive places have even a decent tv and selection of programming.
2) Corporate demos.
Yes, I could see this being used a lot in sales presentations if the image quality is ok. What sales person wouldn't want to take advantage of this in that case? It ensures their presentation is on an easy to carry device that they trust to work, and in some cases may let them forego dragging a laptop along.
3) Camping, in many cases.
Many campgrounds offer some sort of power option. And many people camp with their wivies and children and decide to take a portable power generator along. Sure, for many such as myself, we'd rather camp a bit "rougher", but in that case I wouldn't *want* this feature. If I did anything besides enjoy the outdoors, I'd read a book!
And of course, cell phones are also used by many as their only phone at home. Well, when I'm home but my batteries dead, why should I have to wait for the battery to charge again before the phone works?? Again, let it run straight off of power if plugged in, but still charge the battery if it needs it, like laptops do.
I'd love for someone to explain if there is a good engineering reason why this isn't already done. Otherwise, I suppose it's simply because the companies get to sell more batteries the way it is now, as more people find they need to have a spare battery "just in case". - Posted by: mathandmetal Posted on: 05/25/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
