Not enough info to really judge...
but on the face of it, Target's patent application and grant dates seem too late for it's patent to be valid, since Blu-Ray would have been far into it's development process even by the time the patent was applied for. As such, it seems this may indeed be a case of an invalid patent - one which does not pass the test of obviousness or original development. They may hope to make a fat wad off of Sony here, but they may find they instead have the patent revoked. Of course, when the target is as fat and juicy as Sony, the risk probably makes sense - either they get rich, or they have nothing - and if they don't pursue the patent infringement angle, they have nothing anyway.
