- Walmart Linux & Microsoft Linux. Linux outselling Windows
-
Walmart was one of the first to sell a computer to the masses sporting Linux instead of Microsoft Windows. Del just purchased a lot of Microsoft Linux and will be loading the same to its computers. Microsoft Linux is the version of Linux acquired via a 250 million deal with Novell. It is SUSE Linux with Microsoft support. It includes Open Office, which supports everything coming out of and going into Microsoft Office Best I Can Tell.
I look for HP and other computer manufacturers to cut the same kind of deal with Microsoft for Microsoft Linux. This Novell/Microsoft marriage is producing way more than expected. It appears that 150 to 200 million of the 250 million expected to be sold over 5 years has been sold in 6 Months.
One of the things I have always found interesting about Microsoft is that their employees never lie even though the company appears to be very devious at times. You have to ask the right questions and I did so point blank yesterday.
Did Microsoft consider branding the SUSE Linux the company promotes and supports with the Microsoft name?
Answer yes - Microsoft Linux was considered a brand name but eventually it was determined that SUSE Linux would be best for now.
Did Brad Smith go willingly to SUSE Linux?
Answer yes, qualified. Brad Smith did see the Novell/Microsoft Linux deal through lawyer colored eyes. He had hoped that it would be a mechanism to establish patent rights. That effort has not worked out favorably for Microsoft. Pretty much everyone who came from a math background before getting into computers knows that mathematical expressions are not patentable. Hence once the source code is compiled to machine code (a mathematical expression consisting of Zeros and Ones) there are no patents. Its the reason Microsoft insists on patching its products for device support via machine code. However, Brad Smith is recognizing that Open Source and SUSE Linux are demanded by the market place. There is no turning back.
Is Linux outselling Microsoft Windows?
Answer - Yes on a percentage bases Linux now is slightly outselling Microsoft Windows.
How do we get decision makers to hear? Microsoft employees are allowed to speak candidly because so many IT decision makers hear what they want to.
