Number of bits isn't the issue. Itanium has a different instruction set.
Itanium just doesn't run x86 instruction set applications very well. You really need to think of Itanium as a non x86 processor, like a PowerPC. Xeon is an x86 and runs both 32 and 64 bit applications just fine. An no Windows is not optimized for Xeon. Microsoft's compiler don't even offer that as option and Intel's compiler is probably the best choice for high optimization for either the AMD or Intel family of processors. But really any optimizing compiler is good enough for a comparison. GCC, VS, Intel. Set the optimizations the same an let 'er rip.
