- I did... and get rid of it !
-
Almost a year ago, I offered to myself an Imac 17" flat, G4 1 Ghtz, 1 Mb of RAM, HDD 80 Mb and the Super-Drive for Christmas (2900 Euros that was close from 3400 USD at that time).
That was my first Apple computer ever when I used to have PCs for these last 25 years and I even built them now with Barebone cases and AMD processors (including with the latest AMD Athlon 64bits).
If I was really pleased with the "nice" GUI, I've been very disappointed with both the overall performance (for the price) and the lack of applications!
I was also chocked by the incompatibility of the Super-Drive (that is nothing but a poor Pioneer A03) with medias burnt on similar DVD devices on Windows systems.
I was also amazed to see that buying a brand new system with a brand new OS, I had to download over 120 Mb of upgrade to make it work (I still download only 85 Mb when I install the first ever release of Windows XP on a new PC).
Furthermore, I was recently more than upset when discovering that I should pay almost 189 Euros (200 bucks) to get an upgrade from Panther to Jaguar when my Imac was even not one year old.
And I don't speak about the joke of the Airborn base and the 802.11g network card of Apple (I also bought one) that can't talk with either a LinkSys or a Bewan RLAN!
Fortunately, a good friend of mine had an 3 year old G3-500 Imac that died few weeks ago (yes, Apple computers die too) and who desperately needed a new machine the very same day.
I then decided to sale my Imac to him, and won't get back to Apple for a while.
If I truly appreciated the OS (I must say the GUI), I think that the upgrade policy is even worst that the MS' one.
This week, I just built a new PC for another buddy of mine. Take a look: Barbeone Shuttle SN45G, AMD Athlon 3200+, RAM 1 Gb PC3200+ FSB 400Mhz, HDD Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 200 Gb ATA 133, DVD + & - R/RW, card reader 6 in 1 (PC/MAC), video card Matrox Parhelia 128, 3 (yes three) 17" Iiyama monitors, Altec Lancing ATP3, Wireless keyboard and mouse, Windows XP Pro + Office Pro + Adobe Premiere, all that for less than 4500 Euros!
Make a REAL performance test (i.e. using Adobe) and compare with the same software (Permiere) on a G5! And don't forget the price !
Sorry, the winner is (once again and by far) my WinTel configuration above.
I may come back to Apple one day, when their purported open source OS (Darwin) will effectively be available (and stable) over an X86 platform.
Until then, I'll stay with what is worth for my money (and those of my customers, friends or not).
Cheers. - Posted by: Fifi Posted on: 11/07/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
