Microsoft set no traps...
... it was the OEM from whom the computer was purchased who put the trial copy on the computer apparently without the usual disclaimer that it is time limited and will expire. Surely an 11 year old understands expire? What about "Trial" confuses you?

As for your second paragraph, how hard is it to use Add/Remove programs to get rid of the trial in the first place? Once it had been used for 30 days and expired (reduced functionality mode), and neither the child nor the parents can't figure it out in plain English, then yes, by all means call someone who could.

Or have you never sought assistance at any time in your computing life with computer questions?
