What?
Students are expected to generate content, not simply read. The document has to be available for editing, not just viewing. I thought is was Microsoft that wanted both formats to coexist (http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=290 for example). So why does Word make it difficult to save to ODF. It is already an ISO standard and it is Microsoft that isn't supporting the open format.

The open source crowd is working to support OOXML, even though the standard is huge, doesn't leverage existing XML standards as well as ODF and has tags like 'autoSpaceLikeWord95'. There is no description as to how Word 95 determines autospacing. This is marked contrast with, say TeX, which specifics in detail the algorithms used for optimizing layouts.
