WiFi Access
Last year my company installed a pilot network of WiFi in the Soho area of London.

We used a combination of FSO technology to create a network of nodes and placed 802.11b access points at these nodes.
The internet "pipe" (8Mbps) was brought in via microwave.

We had mixed results with the project and found that the coverage & reliability of the WiFi was not very good. This was partly due to problems with the microwave feed, and having to comply to antenna regulations, again limiting the range and coverage of the WiFi.

A few other points that our customer missed:

1. Billing, authentication & security
2. Penetration of signal into buildings (The UK is hardly renowned for its weather), we also couldn't expect people to sit outside in the winter!
3. Payment for our equipment! Many people have fantastic ideas but don't want to pay for them.

At the end of the day, WiFi is in my opinion an enterprise technology compared to 3G being a pure carrier class technology and hence more reliable.

I too think that WiMAX is a great technology and would like to see more of this in the UK.
For example, if I want broadband, why should I have to get a telephone line (BT) installed when I already have a mobile?
