It makes perfect sense
Back to the future.

If mainframe companies hadn't been blatantly ripping-off their customers, PCs would never have entered the enterprise. There are thousands of client/server models, this is just one that is closer to the thin client or terminal computing environment than it is to the networked PC model.

Users have had PCs for about 15 years now and will resist going back to "dumb terminals", however I think it's inevitable since security and control are soooo much easier in a mainframe or centralised server cluster environment. The wind that was networked PCs reaped the whirlwind of viruses and exploits, even MS is going back to a centralised model where the IT techos control your every move. My work XP box is so tightly locked down I can't even change the rotten screen saver (stops me futzing they say), my HDD is regularly flushed of any non-system files (forces me to use a file server for all work, they say) and only IT approved applications appear for me to use (stops me loading any virus-laden programs or breaching licence conditions, so they say).

So yes, I may as well have a terminal since I can't use any of XPs functionality outside Explorer (or whatever the file manager thing is called).
