On ownership
There do appear to be cultural differences highlighted here, as well as the individual differences that are common to all cultures. The 1st individual difference is the credit card or not. I don't have one. I will never have one. I have a debit card - I can't spend what I haven't got. Now that's perfect for me, I don't care whether the banks are happy with it or not. I pay the bank for a service (a poor service often), I am the customer and I call the shots. I will not be "owned" by an organisation.

Cell phones (that's "mobile phone" in English!) I have an entry level Sendo mobile phone. Its pay as you go, I top up my credit ?5 at a time with a swipe card wherever I see the "top up" sign. It texts, it phones, it plays games, it has an alram clock and a colour display. It is mine, I own it. This is pretty much the preffered way to own a phone in the circles I move in (i.e. no billing from a service provider).

Under no circumstances whatsoever will I (or most of the people I know) willingly become owned by cash hungry hardware manufacturers. My hi fi, my CDs, my tapes, my vinyl, my mini disks - they are mine. I own them. My synthesisers, drum machines, mixer - all mine. I own them. I own the music I create. My PC - Mandrake Linux 9.2, I own the hardware, I own the software. No Redmond spyware or phone home tech going on there, I havent run Windows at home since Win 95.

So basically I am proud to represent a sub-class of people who refuse - and will contine to refuse - to be owned by a faceless corporation. Especially a convicted monopolist one from America!
