US Patent perhaps lasts 17 years
Other coutries do not grant it automatically for any period. In addition to that, patent holder has to pay yearly fees for maintaining patent... or it will expire. It is also a regional regulation and might as well be ignored in other regions.

I am also not a lawyer, but at unviersities in Eastern Europe they teach engineeres (of any kind!) patent principles as a mandatory class so, no "congresssman" or a lawyer could try to play their little games around real innovators.
